One of the most iconic videogames of all time - Space Invaders was released way back in 1978.
Aliens are attacking Earth, and the planet's only hope is a military laser cannon. You control this cannon, moving along the bottom of the screen, as you take shots at the slowly descending waves of aliens. You can take cover behind four bunkers, but beware, as both your own shots and the aliens' beams can slowly destroy these!

Oh hell no. -.-0
Not after the SNES version and the PCE version in Japan. At least this one's probably going to be less expensive but it's still superfluous.

I suppose the arcade version might be alright to download if you wanted to check it out. But even then.....
It could be worse, we could be getting the PC-Engine CD version at 900 Points Eek.

I guess it kinda of an arcade classic and it does belong on the VC, but I'll probably pass in favor of Qix by Taito.

Exciting stuff. Another way of fleecing us out of another £.50 for Space Invaders. It's just too old, decepit and simple to be any fun in 2009.

Oh well, it just had to be released now didnt it?
@vcreviewsstaff. if any of you guys read this.
Why is the only arcade game that's in the coming soon list Space Invaders? Shouldn't all those games that Namco has announced for the VCA also be included?

Space Invaders is true classic to me. It is simple, but addicting to me. I played different versions of it including the 2600 version and the homebrew Atari 7800 version.
I don't think Space Invaders is worth 500 Wii points though.
It is hard for me to say arcade games from the late 70's to the early 80's are worth 500 Wii points.

Bring me arcade Pong, Space Invaders, Galaga, Pacman, Donkey Kong, and Mario Brothers, and I will be a happy camper!
@11. 7th lutz - the less that is said about the Atari 2600, the better

Space Invader is 25 cents per play. This download is $5.00 or 20 quarters. So, if you think you would like to play this more than 20 times than this is a good download for you and worth your Wii points. If you don't think you'll play it more than 20 times than save your Wii points for another title.

@ Tony: I'd much rather play Space Invaders at a real cab than pay 5 bucks for it. ^^

If you look online you can play this for free as a flash game. This deserves respect, but in my eyes it's aged really badly and even at 500 Points, it sounds expensive.

PONG!

Hmmm, I wonder if it's really possible to accurately emulate the original Pong cabinet, seeing as it was built out of discrete logic chips rather than an actual processor and code.

No thanks. I used to have a pretty good version of SI on my Google desktop (I should redownload it), and I'd much rather have SI Extreme anyway.
At least it's a better value than that SNES version...
@Stardust. The Atari 2600 wasn't THAT bad.
And yeah, it would be interesting to see how this game gets emulated on VC. Though it shouldn't be too hard to emulate a game that's basically white lines, a square, and some numbers.

Not sure it's a 500 point game, although I suspect that's the price it's going to be. It's still as addictive as sin.
As for Pong, if MAME can emulate it on the most pedestrian of PCs (think P120), then it won't be that hard to do, despite the bespoke hardware.

Pong used 7 discrete analog servos rather than a cpu. The most powerful home pcs aren't capable of emulating it. Didn't realize you could play it in Mame, they probably used shortcuts to get it to run so that it's more like simulating than emulating.
Edit: just looked it up, Pong has been dropped from MAME because the driver was highly inaccurate and wasn't reproducing the discrete circuits at all.

C'mon Taito, you could just skip this and go with Space Invaders '95: Attack of the Lunar Loonies.
