Following a rash of terrorism outbreaks and increasing opposition from guerilla fighters, the U.S. government has decided to hire a group of professional mercenaries to undergo secret missions, battling through enemy lines to go where no ordinary soldier would dare to go.
Based on the popular arcade game, the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis version of MERCS lets you play as a merc and also adds an original mode, allowing players to choose from five different characters. Take no prisoners as you shoot, drive jeeps and tanks, and clash against huge bosses to accomplish your mission.

This game is cool. It's just like Commando but with better weapons. The whole game is very short; it should not take more than a half hour to beat.

You can find this game on Capcom Classics vol. 1 for Xbox and PS2. It still holds up well, the advantage of the Capcom classic is you can play 3 players. Its a fun game, its just does not last very long. For 800 points and with multiplayer, I would give it a download.
If you enjoy Metal Slug and Super C, you would enjoy this game.(although its top down shooter)
Just pretend your Arnold or Sly when you play

Didn't an XBLA sequel of this just come out? It got some bad reviews, but honestly, looking at this one and the new one, they don't seem very different, either the XBLA game wasn't all that bad, or both of them are really bad.

I have played this and I thought it was good. Its does lack 3 player option though. It also has the shortest first level in video game history.

WTF! If Mercs is Sega then why is it in Capcoms collections reloaded on Psp

I am not sure, but Sega ported many of Capcoms arcade games to the Genesis. They must have worked out some agreement. The Genesis had Ghouls and Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds, Mercs, and Strider. All of them were Capcom arcade games produced by Sega. Later in the Genesis life cycle Capcom brought their own games like Street Fighter 2 and Super SF 2.

Great game! The extra "Original" mode adds some nice replay, also.

Never heard of this one but I do love Metal Slug and Contra. I might check this out. Oh and What's this about a new stage? You mean they added an entirely new stage that wasn't in the original Genesis game?
@ Tony
Love the avatar! I'm a big Transformer nut and Soundwave is my favorite Decepticon.

I thiink i will get this over the PS2 version after all. I don't really care about the lack of co-op since i am only play games single player anyway.
Oh and I am a Transformers fan too Soundwave FTW.

Oh sorry I thought maybe since they changed the name of the game they might have added a new stage as well.
As the kiddies are saying, My bad.
@ Bass XO
You got that right. The New Transformer movies are decent but the designs of the robots will never compare to the original G1 line.

Hey, did anyone notice that the reader average for the game's score is exactly 4 stars? Does that mean that Vc-Reviews finally has a review score everyone can agree upon!?!

23. Bass X0: Once again, Bass speaks truth.
This looks somewhat interesting. I might snag this one. It'll make a good change-up to Contra.
And for some reason watching this game's jeep driving bit of the video reminds me of Jackal and now I want to see that released to the VC sooner rather than later.
Anyway, Mercs looks like a solid release. Though upon further review, I'm probably not going to pay 800 points for a game that looks more like a really good Master System/NES generation game rather than a Genesis/SNES generation game. Oh well. Maybe when I run out of fav VC games to buy I might come knocking on Mercs' door.

Whatever it´s called, MERCS is very nice indeed! One of the best action titles I´ve played on the Mega Drive. I too think the added original mode is excellent. I like both modes, but the original mode has more stuff in it like the shop and extra characters. Pity there is no co-op, but it´s a very enjoyable shooter anyway. Plus, the background stories in the different modes are completely different and hillarious fun!

You know, having invested some more time into this title now, I think I'll have to retract my earlier statement - this game IS better than Bloody Wolf.
Bloody Wolf is still great, though, and absolutely worth your money.

Just bought it. I am really enjoying the experience. The "original" mode is indeed superior to the "arcade", but the fact that it even gives you the option of two wildly different play modes is fantastic. Yes, Contra is better for sidescrolling action, but MERCs is better on the top-down aspect of gameplay. You can't really compare them. Contra's only top-down aspect comes into play infrequently on Contra III and when it does, the controls are pretty terrible.
If you love run n' guns, do yourself a favour and spend the $8. It'll be better than a rental of something new.
