IRONCLAD is a side-scrolling shoot-'em-up originally developed by SAURUS in 1996. You operate a warship and team with the mighty Iron Clad in order to fight the Iron Mask Republic and save the Kingdom of Chop. The biggest appeal of this game comes from discovering all the ways you can attack your enemies. Your weaponry includes three main blast weapons upgradable by collecting more items, a charged attack you can use when Iron Clad is attached to your ship, three types of melee weapons you can brandish to show off your strength in close-range combat, a bomber that clears all enemy bullets, and shooting patterns that change based on whether the Iron Clad is attached or disconnected from your ship. A vast array of weaponry lies waiting to become part of your arsenal. You can even select the stages you want to play, feeding your hunger for combat and allowing you to see different endings for each play-through.

A rare Neo Geo CD gem comes to the Japanese Virtual Console
You can be forgiven for not having heard of Chotetsu Brikin'ger (often referred to as Ironclad Brikin'ger on the web) as it's one of a handful of Neo Geo CD titles that was never released in MVS cartridge form for arcades or outside of Japan (though..

Did someone just make an mistake here?
And is the game called Ironclad when translated?
Also, if this is an Neo Geo CD game, isn't this suppose to cost 1,100 Wii Points?
I expect the game to hit next year in North America?

Why would you suddenly add this to the coming soon list when it had already been announced for a Japanese release for some time. Hsa new info emerged? Anyway: Great to finally see NGCD games on the VC.
@ SSBF: How should we know for sure how much NGCD games are gonna be on the VC?

The English version of the game is called Ironclad.
Since Neo Geo games have both the Japanese and English versions on the same cart, the game doesn't have to have been released outside Japan for there to be an English version, it just has to have been planned for an international release at the point it was made.

@KeeperBvK: I agree, just because it's released in Japan doesn't mean it's coming to North America or Europe for that matter. But it's nice to see some Neo Geo CD games, I won't denide that.
The TG-CD games cost 200 more Wii Points then a normal TG-16 game. So I'm guessing an average Neo Geo CD game would cost 1,000 Wii Points.
@Adamant: So you're basically saying that we'll probably get the game after all? Will this qualify as an import even thought it was planned for an international release?

I have really enjoyed Neo Geo shooters like Last Resort, Alpha Mission 2, Blazing Star, and Prehistoric Isle so I'm sure this one will be good as well.

@Tony: Me too, but the question is, will we ever get it outside of Japan?
Because we obviously know this is a mistake.

Nice graphics. Also, since this is a CD game, it's about time SEGA made a certain add-on available.
Wonder if they'll ever release Pulstar too. That was another shooter with great graphics.

@Super Smash Bros. Fan1999: My guess would be that we will get the English version of the game, and it will be priced as an import.
There's no realy reason why the game WOULDN'T be released here, it's proven popular enough in import circles, and there's enough of obscure and not very well liked Neo Geo games on the VC already that it shouldn't be an obstacle. There's already an English version of the game, so might as well release it.
And when Europe gets an import tax on "Ninja Gaiden" for the NES even though the game WAS released there, just in PAL format with a different name, I can't see how this won't get priced as one, since it was never actually released outside Japan.

So is SNK the official publisher for the VC version, or is this going to be another D4 Enterprise published game?

Also, if this game does make it to NA, it would be a definite purchase for me.

Neogeo is the only VC system I don't have any games for (well VCA but I'll disclude that for now).
It needs some great games that aren't on collections, although another SNK Arcade Classics would be awesome :3

So guys, anyone agree that they'll tear down this page soon? Sean Aaron claimed he made a mistake.

Now to wait for Zintrick, Crossed Swords II (not until Crossed Swords I comes out!), & maybe Samurai Shodown RPG (will obviously be JPN VC exclusive).

This page isn't a mistake - Sean is going to review a select bunch of import titles for the site - but the fact that it's appearing in the Coming Soon list is a mistake. We'll be tackling that shortly, but you can look forward to reading Sean's review in due course.

"Because we obviously know this is a mistake."
Game pages with screenshots, release dates, prices, boxart and graphical headers do not get created by mistake. Sean's going to review some select import releases for us but we have no further news on whether it'll be available in the Western hemisphere. Here's hoping, though.

Hey guys, this is actually the cancelled MVS/AES version of Ironclad according to a Neo Geo message board so don't be surprised if the music isn't as good as the NGCD version. Fortunately, the MVS/AES version was probably complete.

I was right. This is the Neo Geo CD version, so this cost 1,000 Wii Points. Here, it will be 1,100 Wii Points, since it was never released here. But the point is that I'm glad to see this gigantic game coming to the Virtual Console. Look forward to trying it.

What? No this costs 900 points in Japan. So here it'll cost 1,000 points.

It will be interesting to see if Ironclad follows the standard Hanabi template of giving PAL gamers the original version running in 60hz or treads the dubious downgraded 50hz path of SEGA's Hanabi imports.

50Hz, very dark graphics and spanish screen text. Have I accidentally downloaded a dodgy ROM off the internet by mistake???!!!

Aint that the truth... its also not the CD version.

oh dear...perhaps another trip ot Trading Standards is looming for Nintendo. Stating that something is 60hz when it actually runs in 50hz is clear misselling and Spanish Screen text? That's just odd (except for Spaniards of course)

Hey BJQ1972, Your pretty spot on with what you said. The main screen did look crazy dark. I am still enjoying it. But wished it was 60Hz and no spanish text. I am glad that D4 released this rare shump in PAL land. It's only £7.00 if you buy your points online.
I read that bootleg NGCD copies of this game were being sold at crazy prices on eBay. So paying only £7.00 feels good. I don't feel ripped off.
As anyone tryed to contact D4 about this and the rest of the NG games being 50Hz ?.
If D4 are reading this thank you for putting Neo-Geo games on Virtual Console and releasing the on the European marketplace. But please if possible have both 50/60Hz. Thank you.

So who thinks Nintendo is trying to release every shooter out there before anything else? lol.. But hey it's an import Neo Geo release, that's a good sign, I'm down with that.

Wow, this is what I get for falling off the Nintendo radar for a while - an AWESOME Neo Geo CD import release. Add this to the list of games I must download eventually.
