Legend of Hero Tonma is an action game that puts players in control of the magic-user Tonma, whose role - as was typical for game heroes of the day - is to travel to another world and save the princess. Fight your way through seven stages using Tonma's jump ability and shot power.
Collect power-ups and barriers to grow in strength and pummel your enemies. Bring that strength to the end of each stage to face off against and defeat the menacing bosses that aim to keep you from the princess. This well-detailed game's comic visuals and feel will have players wanting to come back for more frantic and exciting action.

In many ways by looking at the preview, this game reminds me of the 1980 classic Karnov. I'm not sure I would consider getting this game but it looks interesting...

Excellent "Ghouls 'N' Ghosts" type of arcade platform game - Remember it well from the game arcades as a kid. Nice to see the PC Engine version on the Wii VC.
If you like arcade platform games like Ghosts & Goblins, Wardner, 3 Wonders and the the like - check it out, a hidden gem!

Wow, I'll never get a game based on your reviews again. While I did end up enjoying this, it's almost nothing like Ninja Spirit. The only things they have in common, gameplay-wise, is that both are action platformers with run-and-gun elements, both have lots of enemies, and both feature upgradeable weapons. Saying this is just like Ninja Spirit is like saying Gunstar Heroes is just like Alien Soldier.
One comment on the game itself: playing this game with the Classic Controller or Wiimote is much more difficult than playing with the GCN controller, as with the GCN one can easily access both the jump button and the auto-fire button. Too bad you have to use the tiny d-pad or the analog stick, though. I'd guess that of all controllers available, the Hori Gameboy Player controller would be the best for this game, if you can actually get one for a reasonable price. Oh, how I dream of a re-release of that fantastic controller...

Just an update to say that the new Thrustmaster T-Wireless will also work well with this game, as you can remap the buttons.

This is one tough cookie. Streaky control hurts it as it has a lot of potential that isn't realized.
