USA VC Release: Super Turrican 2

Posted Mon, 29 Sep 2008 by Damien McFerran

Boom! Blast! Explode! Ahem.

Boom! Blast! Explode! Ahem.

Just one Virtual Console release this week, and it’s the second coming of everyone’s favourite death-dealing cyborg, Turrican. Based on the home computer original, Super Turrican 2 is a radically retooled sequel that takes advantage of the console’s unique capabilities. It retails for the usual 800 Wii points, so be sure to check it out should you be a fan of the first game.

Super Turrican 2 (Super NES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Violence, 800 Wii Points): As the last survivor of the United Freedom Forces, it is your duty to destroy the Machine's forces that have devastated the galaxy. Fight through countless hordes of enemies using everything at your disposal. Use weapons and power-ups to fight back the tide of oncoming enemies. Use special abilities like the Energy Wheel and Cyberfist to find secret areas and score extra lives. When your lives and continues are gone, the mission ends. You are the galaxy's last hope. Are you up to the challenge?

You can check out our full review of Super Turrican 2 to see if this is an action title you'll want to add to your Virtual Console collection.

Should the action-packed adventures of a robotic super-soldier not be enough for you, then over at WiiWare World you can discover what other games have arrived on the Wii this week - namely Bomberman Blast and Nintendo’s Art Style: ORBIENT.

I was wondering where this was and I just checked to see it on the press.nintendo site. I'll definitely be downloading Bomberman. And the graphics sure look pretty in Super Turrican 2... so although I don't normally play this type of game, I just might give it a shot :)

Digiki

2. Digiki Canada 29 Sep 2008, 15:28 BST

This was unexpected I might get it somewhere down the line, depending on how it is compared to the first

Never played it but it certainly looks a nice enough game. I remember the first game getting a lot of stick by people here, but I forget why - I hope Super Turrican 2 is well recieved.

Did any VC game come out in Europe last Friday? I wasn't able to find an update for 9/26 on the EU VC.

RGVEDA

5. RGVEDA Germany 29 Sep 2008, 15:39 BST

No, last week was only a Wii Ware Update in Europe.

6. Rapadash6 United States 29 Sep 2008, 15:48 BST

I took a chance and downloaded the first Super Turrican and I can't say I am totally happy that I did. Don't get me wrong as I'm sure it's a great game but Metroid it isn't, which the comparisons by reviewers lead me to believe otherwise. Even though I'll be passing on this particular game I'm just glad to see more SNES games being added. There was a while there where we weren't getting any at all.

The Fox

7. The Fox United States 29 Sep 2008, 16:13 BST

Only one game yet again? Super Turrican 2 isn't a bad game by any means, but these one game weeks are total sh*t.

Tony

8. Tony United States 29 Sep 2008, 16:19 BST

Even though its a one game week, I still have to say September has been an awesome month for downloadable games. I am really looking forward to October. At least we know Gradius 2 will arrive.

Bass X0

9. Bass X0 United Kingdom 29 Sep 2008, 16:27 BST

America gets three VC games in the space of a fortnight, just like Europe gets. The only difference is that we get our VC and WiiWare weeks seperately but it all evens out at the end more or less. Not sure whether I would prefer America's way or not.

ALDAWGZ

not really to excited 4 this game but def getting bomberman

Ricardo91

11. Ricardo91 United States 29 Sep 2008, 16:32 BST

That's it :(? Well, I'm not interested in this game, but I'm definitely picking up Bomberman Blast.

deadbattery

12. deadbattery United States 29 Sep 2008, 16:37 BST

Yep, JUST ONE VC GAME. Honestly, WHY don't they release a crap game alongside it, just to get it out of the way? I really wish Nintendo would stop the idiotic draaaaaaaaagggggggggiiiiinng out of the release schedule. Do they think gamers will value the game more if it's the only one released in a week or something? That's stupid.

Tony

13. Tony United States 29 Sep 2008, 16:46 BST

@ deadbattery
My theory is they want people to check the Wii shop every week. That's why they drag out releases

WarioFan63

14. WarioFan63 United States 29 Sep 2008, 16:50 BST

The idea is that it helps Nintendo keep VC going as long as they can before they run out of all available games. Because if they kept up with the 3 games a week schedule, perhaps all things considering they couldve run out of all the games they get ahold of near the end of 2009 or etc. and lets say the Wii dies out in 2012 or etc.

I mean, I know theres enough on all currently VC supported to keep the thing alive for many years, even at 3 games a week, but not all are going to be easily available to put up on the service.

I really dont care how many games we get as long as we get something. And for it to be something highly regarded like Super Turrican 2 just makes it all the better. Its a shame though some people feel quantity should have priority over quality...

BB Sting

15. BB Sting United States 29 Sep 2008, 17:03 BST

The vc will be around long after the wii dies. It'll most likely turn up on future Nintendo consoles where we'll be able to download/stream gamecube and wii games right along with SNES and Ultra 64 games.

deadbattery

16. deadbattery United States 29 Sep 2008, 17:10 BST

I DON'T prefer quantity over quality. I DON'T enjoy skimming though tons of uninteresting games to find something good. If I controlled the Virtual Console, I'd immediately remove universally-hated garbage like Donkey Kong Jr. Math, China Warrior, Urban Champion, etc. Whether you like it or not, junk like Super Pitfall is going to be released on the VC eventually. I think that the sooner they release it and get it out of the way, the better, because that's one less bad game to dread in the future.

Bass X0

17. Bass X0 United Kingdom 29 Sep 2008, 17:16 BST

"I DON'T enjoy skimming though tons of uninteresting games to find something good."

Then why browse through the Wii Shop when you can browse through the lists of released games here?

"Its a shame though some people feel quantity should have priority over quality..."

Yeah, those crap games are going to be released at some time, so would you rather have one week of four crap games or four weeks of one average game each like Super Turrican 2 here (a good game but not one particularly desired) before moving onto games we actually want?

FunkMasterRitter

18. FunkMasterRitter United States 29 Sep 2008, 17:19 BST

didn't the 1st super turrican come out by its self as well???

That Guy from Faxanadu

19. That Guy from Faxanadu Sweden 29 Sep 2008, 17:27 BST

Super Turrican is better than Super Turrican 2, so be sure to pick that up first. ST2 is pretty good too, but more like a straightforward actiongame. No exploration at all.

Kevin

20. Kevin United States 29 Sep 2008, 17:56 BST

I'll be downloading this and bomberman eventually. In the meantime I'll be enjoying mega man 9.

Bass X0

21. Bass X0 United Kingdom 29 Sep 2008, 18:03 BST

If by "enjoying" you mean ripping your hair out and screaming all manner of swear words out loud, then yeah.

Tony

22. Tony United States 29 Sep 2008, 18:12 BST

@ Dead battery
I don't want them to remove the garbage. Let them stay with the good games. Sometimes I get a kick out of playing old bad games like Urban champion and volleyball just to see Nintendo's humble beginnings. I do however want the superior games to outnumber the bad.
Also if there were no bad games we would not get any funny game reviews that make fun of them.

Ok Mega Man 9 is tough but it is fun once you start beating robot masters

Kultist

23. Kultist Canada 29 Sep 2008, 18:19 BST

Hmm... back to 1-game weeks (not considering WiiWare, it is VC Reviews after all). I am not going to complain, especially considering the great last few weeks we have had, but I do hope we won't get back to piss-poor weeks like the first months of summer. Slowing down the pace with upcoming holidays is not a good idea methinks. I am not saying ST2 is piss-poor (never played and will not be getting it), I'm just saying 1 VC games a week is rather dull. I have to agree with deabattery's 1st comment (12), releasing an obscure/bland game every week alongside another one might keep things a little more exciting. On another hand, it is good to see SNES releases, it was long neglected (with the exception of SMRPG).

RadioShadow

Looks like Contra, Metal Slug and Metroid combined together. It might be a title I would like to play but I'll try a rom first.

Hope the Japanese have a better week tomorrow.

Ricardo91

I was expecting Kirby's Dreamland 3 today for some reason. Too bad we didn't get it. :P

Corbie

I thought maybe Metal Slug 2 would hit. But Kirby's Dream Land 3 is long overdue.

Badknux

I wasn't expecting Bomberman Blast at all, they hadn't even announced its release for North America. And then suddenly, it comes out! Very happy with that release. And as for Turrican, I'll definitely pass.

The Joker 72190

Twilight Crow

I liked Super Turrican 2 when I was little, It's a nice game, but with so many other good games on VC that I haven't even tried, I'll just pass on this one.

@Mr. Cheez/Corbie
I hoped for Kirby's Dreamland 3 too.
How long do you think it's gonna be before it's release?

Corbie

37. Corbie United States 29 Sep 2008, 23:58 BST

Who knows? I thought the game would have already been released by now, especially given the fact that Kirby Super Star Ultra was just released. Shows you what I know. :)

classicmike

38. classicmike United States 30 Sep 2008, 01:15 BST

Wow this is a great release especially since today is my birthday. Definetely going to get at least one of the games that got released today.

Jolted85

39. Jolted85 United States 30 Sep 2008, 01:26 BST

Well even though it's a one VC game week, it is another SNES game and we don't have a whole lot of those, another interesting fact about Super Turrican 2 is that it is kinda rare over here in the states for the SNES, so having it on the VC makes it easier to play.

Mickeymac

40. Mickeymac United States 30 Sep 2008, 01:45 BST

Yes, I've been waiting forever for this game! While admittedly I never legally owned the original( I was getting to it!), I definitely plan on getting this one ASAP! Pretty much every part of both the Turrican games appeal to me, and I can definitely see this one holding my attention for a good long while.

@classicmike

Happy Birthday!:)

Also, does anyone know which Mega man 9 boss is weak to Galaxy Man's power? Because I found no use for it yet againnst any boss since it is so slow and doesn't suck them into the hole.

Twilight Crow

It's used against Jewel Man, it sucks the jewels around him, and damages him when he touches the black hole.
