Metroid (NES) Review

Metroids – the most dangerous creatures in the galaxy – have fallen into the hands of Space Pirates!

At over 20 years old now the Metroid franchise is still going strong. Assuming you know nothing about Metroid the basic premise is you have to collect all your scattered weapons and take out the mother brain at the end of the game. The game is long, difficult and there is no map to help you (unless you find one on the Internet!). The first power up allows you to morph into a ball which enables you to access areas you would not be able to otherwise.

There is a huge underground world to explore. Different sections are coloured differently and there are rocky, industrial and lava themes also to break up the repetitive nature of the exploring. That is the real challenge of Metroid, the element of exploring. The baddies along the way serve little more than obstacles to avoid; the real challenge here is conquering your environment.

The controls are fairly basic, Samus can only fire up and sideways which can be annoying when you need to be able to shoot diagonally. You gain the ability to fire missles quite early on in the game which are needed for destroying certain enemies and opening special doors.

The Virtual Console's inbuilt save point will take care of maintaining your games progress, however the original password system which Metroid used to maintain a gamers progress can still be useful.

Conclusion

Considering how dated the game mechanics and level design for Metroid feel these days it is recommended for most people to check out Metroid: Zero Mission on the GBA or wait for Super Metroid on the SNES to be released on the Virtual Console if you want a Metroid fix. This is far from being a bad game, but you will most likely need to be a huge retro enthusiast to persist with this long enough to discover the diamond in the rough.

This game's really hard. :O Even with the invincibility code (NARPAS SWORD0 000000 000000) it's tough to finish the game.

So strange, how Nintendo named one of its greatest series after nightmare-inducing (hey, for an NES game :P) . . . well, maybe the nastiest non-boss bad guys I can think of offhand in videogame history.
9/10

But then, "Zelda" didn't make sense either (a meaningless reference to Zelda Fitzgerald).

Way too difficult to be playable without eons of patience. Even as a fan of the later games in the Metroid series, and really liking the design, music, and atmosphere, I gave up on this one pretty quickly.

Despite the great music, the endlessly repeating background sprites will confuse anyone without a map, and enemies clipping you as you pass through doors is truly annoying. Great for it's time, if you can put yourself in the proper mindset, otherwise go for Zero Mission instead

I am currently playing Super Metroid. But I remember really enjoying the original back in the day. I think this fall I will go on a retro binge and d/l this along with Legend of Zelda.

I'd give it a 8/10 personally.
I like it a ton.

I had a bad start with the game, around 2002, and I would have given it a similar score.

But, after giving it a fair try again in 2009 and forgeting about all the gaming comforts I used to like after 1986 I truly began to love this game.

I finished it several times, without maps or anything, collected 100% of the items once and even did a decent casual speed run (both bosses) on it.

For modern players this game is very flawed. From a NES perspective it should get a 9/10.
