If you follow the Pokémon Trading Card scene, you might have heard recently how the YouTuber Logan Paul managed to get his hands on what was apparently the "only known sealed box of first-edition base set Pokémon cards".
He forked out a whopping $3.5 million for the lot and well it turned out he got scammed. After concerns were raised about the authenticity of the cards by the Pokémon TCG community, Paul decided to unbox the card packs with the help of some experts only to discover they were filled with G.I. Joe trading cards.
Paul admits the entire group - including the authenticators - were fooled, and shared the following final thoughts:
"I'm a super positive person, bro - and I'll always be the one to look on the bright side and I'm trying but this is very hard. It's just so sad for all parties involved, it's sad for the Pokémon community - like how many fraudulent things are out there? I'm grateful for the things that I have that are real now, I'm picturing my Charizard in my head...something real, something worth a lot of money that is real. Damn bro, I just went from eleven first edition boxes to five. We got f***ed, end of story."

The title seemed a bit misleading. At first I thought it was blaming Logan Paul for setting up a clickbait video.
Lmao.
Man with more money than sense gets burned.
I have absolutely no sympathy for him or his brothers with their pranks, stunts, and influencer entitlement. Especially the suicide forest controversy.
People like him are the ones who buy NFTs as a final customer, that actually want to keep and collect them and not resell them for investment/tax evasion/money laundering.
Fake cards for fake nerd.
Sucks to suck. It’s what he deserves for artificially inflating the Pokémon TCG market.
Bahah poor guy.
Isn't this the guy who was selling NFTs that were pictures of his Pokemon cards for thousands of dollars? Seems hypocritical for him to complain about being scammed. That's ignoring his... many other controversies, too.
Another example of economic illiteracy.
It doesn't matter if it's someone poor surviving on a minimum wage, or someone who just won the lottery or a rich celebrity, people can easily lose everything and ruin their lives thanks to not knowing the basics of spending money, not even the basic concept of never spending more than you earn is known by them.
Hahaha oh man that's great. That guy is beyond a stain on society. Big thumbs up to the guy who got him good.
Karma. That's pretty much what this story is about.
Oof that must hurt makes you wonder if they were specifically trying to scam only him or they were just a scammer to everyone.
Hmmm🤔
The sad thing about this is that he still got the publicity he wanted regardless of the outcome.
Fake Pokemon card is free and easy to get.
Just print the Pokemon card picture from Google image then you have your own fake Pokemon card just for curiosity.
@Anti-Matter annihilates NFT owners
Lol ... lol.... lol ..... loooooool
Could not happen to a nicer guy. 🙄
Quite frankly, Logan Paul will be ok. The thing is... this is the kind of market people like him have created. The moment this kind of thing skyrockets as an investment and a way of making money... well it's all high risk there, and a lot of bad intentions.
Not sorry for Logan Paul or the authentication company (they were wrong). I only hope "normal" people learn the risks of this kind of expensive hobby, and the overall market lowers to more affordable numbers.
Good, let this be a lesson to all the people that have created this idiotic cult of what is a simple trading cards game.
And whoever scammed him off, good job.
Oh my goodness, stop giving this man publicity, just let him DIE OFF in popularity.
He probably did this so people will talk about it ........ and .. here we are.
All those sealed vintage games going for insane prices at auctions might just have 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' inside. You would never know if you didn't open it!
I have no sympathy for a man who spends 3 and a half million on a bunch of paper.
@victordamazio
Sadly that is likely peanuts to him.
It's always funny when a wealthy jerk loses out.
Logan Paul may live in my country now, but he did it all to himself. Spending 3.5M on anything, even a mansion, is madness, especially for a pack of cards.
Oh well, he can always make a real nice GI Joe table now.
I'm grateful for the things that I have that are real now
Like family? Friends? The things you probably took for granted on a daily basis? I'm glad to see he gained some perspective from this ma-
I'm picturing my Charizard in my head...something real, something worth a lot of money that is real.
Oh.
Hahah, this guy puts money above everything and dares to type a story like this... Go away, you ruined the tcg community.
I remembers those GI Joe cards. They were pretty sweet.
Why did the scammer even bother putting them in? He could have stuffed the box with anything. Maybe this whole thing is BS.
It’s nice to see the Nintendo Life community in agreement for once.
Bahahahahahaha - serves that ******* right. He is lower than the grass under my dog's steamers.
Can someone genuinely explain to me why this is news?
Everyone seems to agree that he's a colossal waste of oxygen, so why are sites like this enabling him by giving him a spotlight?
We have a GDQ going on, write some stuff about some remarkable runners, the community, community projects, whatever. Something worthwhile not giving people like this attention...
My very first Pokemon caught while I was on the toilet is digitally immortalised in an NFT that I can sell to him.
I hate the guy as much as the next person but I hate thieves more, to think someone got that much money scamming anyone, even if its someone I don't like, is disgusting to me.
Two wrongs don't make a right and here's hoping Paul learns a lesson and the person who did this gets in trouble for it.
Well, this will either encourage scammers more or bring more attention to the problem. Ironically those cards are probably worth a lot more now that Logan Paul touched them.
schadenfreude is a great word. Laughing at his misfortune is fun.
He's a moron, he deserves this.
Maybe the next slap in the face he gets will be from a boxer willing to actually fight rather than be paid to put on a show and make him look good
You can laugh at Logan all you want, but it's pretty messed up that the market for almost every collectable items these days are overrun with fakes and scammers.
I'm sure without the experts there to verify Logan wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyways.
I've little sympathy for anyone who could afford to spend $3.5million on pieces of card.
There's far more people worse off (including everyone in this topic) than this richie getting scammed while trying to inflate the prices of pokemon cards.
Sadly that amount of money was probably the same as me buying a regular pack of cards
"it's sad for the Pokémon community"
The only thing worth spending that much money on is a massive house or a small flat in posh part of London.
This proves that collecting Pokemon cards ( amongst other things ) is a mugs game.
Oops.
I think that the real losers here are the authentication company, which don't get mentioned nearly enough. Clearly no idea what they were doing (and with seemingly no experience either according to that linked article). It's ok though, I'm sure they'll be returning what they were paid for their approval of such a high value item...
I don't own a single possession that I care deeply about, we all live very short lives and we are all just temporary owners of objects, including your home etc. None of this goes with you in the ground or the big fire. So why anyone thinks inanimate objects are worth so much value is beyond me, especially when it is just pieces of paper. He should put his wealth to better use, you are famous for nothing, recognise how lucky you are and starting putting your excess money to better use. Like helping others maybe?
Serves him right. He goes on to say "Watch this video so I can get my money back.". He and his brother are wastes of oxygen.
Oh, this story seems to get even more fun though, with one of the sellers in the chain starting to act really strangely: https://www.pokebeach.com/2022/01/logan-pauls-base-set-case-confirmed-fake-threats-bribery-and-shady-behavior-down-the-chain
Logan Paul got his money back though.
Don't really know much about the bloke but he does look as thick as ****, so no surprise someone saw him coming.
This sounds like a set up for clicks to me. No way can $3.5m exchange hands without some kind of assurances and quality control. I do not believe for one second that the people who he bought this from cannot be contacted and confronted.
Wouldn't surprise me if he set this up himself for the clicks.
Meanwhile kids starve worldwide penniless...
But too bad someone blew $3.5 million on some cards.
Which turned out to be fake.
He totally deserves it! These kind of people mess it up for the real fans. The fans that collect these cards for fun, not money. And then there are also the people who are super happy they can buy one pack of cards once in a while because they aren't drowning in money. But people like Logan, throwing 1 million here and there, raiding the shops...they are pure evil.
ngl - whoever this guy is - $3,5 million? lmao - first world problems at its finest
Do Travis Scott next, scammers!
What a sad sorry waste...
... giving classic G.I.Joe trading cards to a scumbag like Logan Paul. I could've had those! LOL
Paid $3.5M for Pokémon cards, got ripped off anyway.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
(not that Pokémon cards is a stupid game, but buying them for the price of a mansion IS, undoubtedly!)
The biggest crime here is this bell has the money to waste like this in the first place
Never understand the hate for this guy. Nintendo life is always so positive and now it's like we're gate keeping Pokémon and spewing hatred. Cmon guys, another person who loves Pokémon got screwed over pretty hard, weird time to try and drag them down further huh?
Saddest violin plays
“Oh no, I wasted a few million dollars on what I thought were Pokémon cards! How tragic! At least I have an idea of what’s important in life: the fact that I’m rich!”
What a douche.
@Davzilla he doesn’t love Pokemon. He loves money. And inflating an already (clearly) dodgy market with further speculation and lies doesn’t sit well with people who actually love the TGC or franchise.
I’m sure the scammers are still at it with the kind of money they make off people.
@HotGoomba I completely get where you're coming from but it is a really nice feeling to see this dude get screwed over.
Dumb, entitled and got ripped off? Who would've guessed
Think of the debts that could pay off for regular households? That such a fool can afford to waste such a large amount of money is disgusting.
I think this whole story must be a fraud, I cannot believe someone can waste so much money on something so pathetic.
One word: Karma
every time logan paul appears in the news:
I'll take sayings for 100
The difference between ignorance and apathy
What is a cleaver way to say "i don't know and I don't care?"
On one hand I hope the crook who sold these fakes goes to jail.
On the other hand, I think Logan Paul is drama creating clown, so it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!
It's like when you're watching a sporting match and you despise both team, and you're hoping they just destroy each other.
I know a lot of people are stroking themselves off because this happened to Logan Paul. I just want to and feel like I need to say atleast this shines a light on a issue in collector markets (big or small). People can and will sell and pass off stuff as legit to rip you off.
Going to different brick and morter shops or vendors at cons seeing fake stuff is sold as legit. Not uncommon to see people go so far to make the thing they are copying look legit and charge for it like it's the real thing. It's annoying and it sucks having to completely eye ball every damn detail of a item in a used market because no one calls this crap out.
@Bret True but I think I'd be even better if we forgot he existed
Kind of surprised this didn't end in a murder/suicide.
A fool and his money, etc. If only the crass pursuit of materialistic wealth (based around a flimsy children's card game) made a person happy.
When i read the article, it says "I've always been a giant douche bag and as a result of my persistent douchebaggery, i got rolled over on, let me be a lesson to all, don't be a douche bag"
Thanks Longan, now if you don’t mind getting in the ring with Mike Tyson, WE (not you) can all live happily ever after...
Him and his degenerate brothers are the ambassadors for the "dudebro" subspecies that has evolved over the years.
Make me sick to my stomach, they have literally NO talent.
Not actually sad at all. Couldn't happen to a better person
"I'm picturing my Charizard in my head...something real, something worth a lot of money that is real."
At least he still knows what is truly most important in life: things and money.
The G.I. Joe team foils yet another Cobra plot
Yo Joe!
Well, now he knows. And knowing is half the battle!
@mr_benn can't believe would drop so much money without actually inspection of the cards in person. pay for someone from the community to inspect if you have to and if seller refuses you know they are fake.
@Arehexes different topic but look at sneakers for example. Replica market is getting crazy! Now because the reps are so damn good they can pass these so called legit checks. (There is no such thing as a 100% legit check by the way)
Personally though I have no problems with reps and actually buy them myself from China as I got sick of Nike/Jordan brand and the BS, consumers can't get hype sneakers or even regular Jordans sometimes unless they buy from resellers for ridiculous prices. I decided if Nike are not gonna help consumers then why should I show them any loyalty. Reps are fire!!
Now what I do have a problem with is people selling reps as legit retail pairs. It's scummy and them people need to burn in hell.
@Fortysixter is it really any different to somebody buying pieces of art? Anyone with the money available who is buying rare Pokémon cards is doing so as an investment. There is way worse ways rich people are using there money.
Someone I’ve never heard of gets scammed. I’m trying to care … but nope, there’s zero sympathy for someone paying $3.5M for a deck of cards
Dummy got dummied
This guy is a halfwitted selfish buffoon of a human being. Think of all the good that could have been done with that money.
@Davzilla I'd point out that even in his moment of using the internet as a shoulder to cry on, this piece of work can't help but stroke his own ego off:
"I'm picturing my [$300k-$1m] Charizard in my head...something real, something worth a lot of money that is real. Damn bro, I just went from eleven first edition boxes to five[...]"
Just because somebody loves Pokemon doesn't automatically make them a good person, and most everyone can smell the spiritual stank this dude's putting out from all the way across the interwebs; he's practically made a career out of broadcasting it, after all. If Logan Paul himself can't help but to keep bragging about how good he's got it, with his million-dollar cards and multiple remaining first-edition boxes, then what place is there for us to feel any shred of sympathy for him?
We sure this isn't just a publicity stunt? Wouldn't surprise me.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. As the “value” of these pieces of cardboard goes up so will the number of scammers. Almost feel sorry for the guy but if you got 3 million to lose on Pokémon cards then you surely don’t need my sympathy. Be smarter next time.
I’m no fan of his, but I’m disappointed at the cruel joy this comment section takes in the misfortune of another human being. I don’t think it’s right to wish harm on anybody — he’s still a person, despite whatever shameless stunts he’s pulled in pursuit of attention.
That said I do think it’s valid that someone who can afford millions on cards probably isn’t hurting too bad from a scam.
I hope that he was able to press charges against the scammers. Scum buckets.
@Abes3 when you are trying to fill the minimum word count
3.5 million? probably just some spare change to wipe his butt off with.
I can totally get behind someone paying a few hundred dollars for something rare they are nostalgic for or have some other emotional connection with. I can even get behind paying a lot more money for some piece of art that has historic significance.
But paying ungodly amounts of money for something, where they literally produced millions of copies and the only value comes from "oh, it is still in the original packaging" or "the box it comes in has a red stripe instead of a black one and was only sold this way for 3 months" and on top of that buying it not to simply own it but in the hope of selling it to another idiot for even more money down the line gets no sympathy from me.
