You control a ninja, Shinobi, who must battle his way through each level in search of hostages which must be rescued. You have shurikens, kicks and punches to defend yourself with, as well as powerful ninja magic which can clear the screen of enemies in one use.
Each level is broken down into smaller scenes and hostages are guarded by big blokes who throw swords. Watch out for gun-toting enemy henchmen and ninjas.
Reaching the end of each level will find you battling it out with a boss. These range from 8ft giants to helicopter gunships.

I played it many times in the arcade. Its similar to Rolling Thunder except with Ninjas

The TurboGrafx port of Shinobi was much better than this, sadly it misses some levels from the arcade. The Master System version was still pretty reasonable at the time, but yes it is now very dated!

The arcade version was great for its time, but this version looks to be a bit weak.

The Sms version is better than the Nes version based on what I remember from playing both versions.
It is not my favorite Shinobi game though. I rank it below Shinobi 3 and Revenge of Shinobi for the Sega Genesis.

@Ricardo91 The Shinobi arcade game is on the Ultimate Collection, but not the Master System version. It might be interesting to see the differences if you're a Shinobi fan like me.

this was my favourite game of all time, i managed to clear it with one credit after watching people play it over and over again. The arcade version is still better then the Master System version. I would love this to be released on virtual arcade (original version) its on the xbox and PS3 collections

Played this game until the cartridge burned out. Could never beat that Masked Devil at the very end, though. Looks like I'll have the opportunity to quench my ninja thirst for revenge!

Looks a bit simplified compared to Shinobi 3 (only Shinobi game I've played) but it looks like it could still be a bit of fun.
