Space shooting game set in the future with Earth under attack by robots. You are the pilot of a mech robot which can either walk on planet surfaces or fly in space. There are two types of levels in the game. Surface levels take place on planets or moons and allow the mech to run and jump to the end of the level while fighting enemies, as in a side scrolling game. Space levels have no gravity and allow the mech to move in any direction. The mech can be equipped with a large assortment of machine guns, lasers, and grenades.

just how similar is this game to cybernator?

It's not actually *that* similar. Cybernator is a straightforward action title, whereas this is a bit more complex, you can edit features of your mech and stuff. It's part of the 'Assault Suit' series.
It was called Assault Suit Leynos in Japan, and saw a 'proper' sequel on the Saturn, which was the same kind of thing but had graphics more on par with Cybernator (which was called Assault Suit Valken in Japan, fact fans).
Confused? Yeah, me too.

Here you can find the correct answer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_Suits_series
So Cybernator (Assault Suits Valken in Japan) IS the proper sequel of Target Earth (Assault Suits Leynos in Japan).

Zoltan - that Wiki link actually confirms what I said...Valken is an INDIRECT sequel to Leynos, with the PROPER sequel appearing on the Saturn...so how exactly was my answer incorrect?

Damo - You are right, my english knowledge tricked me a little. By the way: Cybernator was one of my favorite game on SNES and I could finish the game without loosing life

Zoltan - ah, I see. No problem.
Cybernator is indeed a fantastic game - it's probably worth noting that Target Earth isn't anywhere near as good, just in case anyone has their hopes up!

This is a far better game than Cybernator, in my opinion, and one of my favorite console games, period. If you started with Cybernator, I can see a bit of a shock coming to these smaller, simpler graphics, but the technique and depth of this game is rivaled by very few others in its genre. It's very difficult (you'll want to use the unlimited continues trick when you start) but I've finished it many times without using the trick. Along with the difficulty, the first few stages are graphically poorer than the later ones making it a harder game to get into. Music is fantastic, as well. The best part is learning to master the controls and weapons, it's quite a rush when you find that your own skill turns a seemingly impossible game into a breeze.

Sure, it has some depth but you have to be extremely careful not to get your ass kicked in most of the levels so it's not as enjoyable unless you cheat. The music is pretty awful too.

I played this, boy was it hard, it took me forever to figure out how to pick the weapons, let alone use them effectively. I'll stick with Cybernator, even though I did see a lot of potential in Target Earth.

The biggest thing that people miss, making them think it is harder than it is, is that your rewards are better if you complete the task for each stage faster/better. For instance, that ship in the first stage (from the video) can be taken out VERY quickly and the amount of cash you get to spend is greatly increased if you can stop it at a high distance away.

Bummed this hasn't come out in the US yet. One of my all-time favorite games. Yes, it's difficult. Imo, music is great, especially for it's era... and although taste in music is subjective, I'll suggest that calling the music "awful", as an earlier poster did, is either an inflated reaction or just someone with marginalized taste.
Still, if you don't like to develop skills over time with practice to master a game, but would rather just breeze through a game without thinking or trying, you probably won't like this game. I get that.
Having played the SNES sequel to this game, Cybernator, for awhile again, I find it more highly flawed than I remembered. It's okay and the graphics are fun, but the gameplay has nothing on Target Earth. Cybernator is very shallow.

Btw, tatemon555, could you please list the "definitely way better similar" games to this on the VC! I want to play them and I haven't seen or read about a single one. Don't know how I could have missed them.
