Treasure is no stranger to the Virtual Console – we’ve already experienced the sublime 'run and gun' gameplay of Gunstar Heroes and the wonderfully deranged Dynamite Headdy. This tiny Japanese developer has a back catalogue packed with classic titles,..

This one of those forbidden fruit type games?

You know, like how Eve knew the Apples would just be regular Apples, but because they were forbidden she wanted them so bad, and then did and doomed the earth forever (Or so it goes).

Because this looks like Starwing mixed with EDF on the 360. The linear on the rails style progression with mediocre shooting gameplay.

It just looks like a 3D shmup to me, and not a particularly good one either. It looks boring, really boring.

"Because this looks like Starwing mixed with EDF on the 360. The linear on the rails style progression with mediocre shooting gameplay."

It's more like a (relatively) modernized Space Harrier (side-to-side and vertical control from behind the player) with a wider arsenal of moves and enemies that are actually fun to fight.

While I love Space Harrier 1 (2 is bleh) and Starwing. I still think it looks bad.

The only thing that makes me think this game mightn't suck, is that it's by Treasure. So as bad as it looks to me, I would still buy it because of the fantastic games Treasure have already released on the VC.

The video seems to suggest that, atleast I cant think of any other way to both aim and run on the same time. Left hand on D-pad for controlling, with L as jump. Right hand on analog stick, with Z as fire.

Personally I'd give it the 5 stars as it's just amazing what they did on the N64. Atmosphere, story, frame rate, action, game play. Plain unique in every way on this machine. Unfortunately though I find it a bit easy, the story might not appeal to everybody, it's short and it might be too simple to some, so my rather objective rating would have to be 4 out of 5. ;)
I love my N64 for games like this. ^^

The Classic Controller kinda makes this game odd... Gotta see if it works with the Gamecube pad once I get my Wavebird. The main problem is its reliance on the shoulder buttons in either of the three control configurations. For the CC, the least awkward control configuration - the one that doesn't necessitate using the L button as the shoot button - is configuration 3. Configuration 2 is pretty decent, too, since it doesn't make you use the R button as the jump button.

This game has it's faults, yes, like shortness and the fact that you can't change subtitles into English(the voices kinda hard to understand at some points), but that doesn't change the fact that this game is insanely good. A rare and great action game from Treasure in this side of Star Fox 64. Since it's a Japanese title, the game costs 200 points more for an N64 VC game. As the game used a unique control setup, it can be awkward to get used to on a Classic or GC controller. The gameplay is a blend of Gunstar Heroes, Panzer Dragoon and Star Fox 64. My thoughts: I enjoyed every moment of playing Sin & Punishment. A great action game, bar none...

Until someone makes an N64 pad shaped Classic Controller for the Wii (now there's an idea...) I have been enjoying Control Configuration 3 with the Classic Controller. Not so easy to jump (a button) while shooting, but the shooting on (b) and the strafing on the shoulder buttons make sense.

I downloaded this on Friday, fantastic game if you take it for what it is, an arcade on-rails shooter and worth every point it cost. I think the aircraft carrier level is probably the best shooter level I've ever seen, if I'd have played it on the N64 when it came out I would have been blow away. I've always been a fan of Treasure and was a bit disappointed it didn't get a release over in the west but hey, worth the wait!

This game is a lesson in frustration and also what the N64 was capable of. It's a very good game, interesting, and artsy. However, it is so d@mn hard. Even on easy, the game will punish you. For those easily frustrated, look out. However, those looking for a very different game, a challenge, and some flavor that never made it out of Japan, this game is worth the money. I like it, but not totally my bag of tea. Also, I'm sure it played much better on the N64 controller, but the cube controller works ok once you get used to it. Maybe the classic controller wil handle better?

Sin and Punishment is best described as what would happen if Starfox, Time Crisis, House of the Dead, and Jet Force Gemini all got together and had a beautiful, relentless love child. I suppose now is as good a time as ever to acknowledge this great game, considering it does take place in 2007 despite being made in 2000. Why you never got to play this game is sadly unknown. It was translated into English. Hell, the voice acting was originally in English anyway, don’t ask why, so all the nitty gritty was already done with, and the only thing left to really do was release it. It never happened. I guess it could have been due to a lack of interest, considering this was right on the line between the birth of the Gamecube and the death of the Nintendo 64. In any case, you have been robbed of one of the finest games the N64 has to offer. Regardless of your language capabilities, playing this game is awesome, even if you have to import it for a ridiculous price and carefully saw off some bits of plastic so that it will fit into your inferior American console. Goddam, this you deserve better. You pay your taxes, and you are a respectable citizen, so why the fuck wouldn’t Nintendo just push through all the bullshit and do whatever miniscule work it required to release this? I don’t know. Sin and Punishment is friggin awesome, just about as badass of a shooter as you will find on the console and great mesh of different elements of third person shooters. It isn’t without it’s little issues, but the fun factor is through the roof.

The game is a futuristic third person shooter that moves along on “rails,” that is, you don’t choose where you move but instead how you aim and sidestep while going along that set path. The two main characters are Saki and Arain, two brave sensible rebels, and you control them through the games several levels. You are expected to be a walking army with very few weapons, namely a police issue laser gun and a sword built into it. This may seem simple for some peoples tastes, but adding anything more would just ruin everything. It’s really all you need, and you never find yourself wishing you had other weapons in the game. Learning to use both of these weapons efficiently is key; the gun has two modes of aim, one manual and one less powerful lock-on, and they both have their time and place. The key to playing this game effectively is being able to move, aim, and shoot at the same time, and it can get pretty difficult. There are a lot of buttons used in this game, for sure. You need to sidestep, roll, jump, aim, and dodge bullets in rapid succession, so you’ve got enough on your mind to worry about without having many weapons to chose from. The sword is used for close combat only, and it is initiated by tapping Z very quickly when something is near enough. If you can manage to master it, you can end up doing a lot of damage, saving a lot of aiming, and quickly taking down stages with greater efficiency.

Sin and Punishment is, like most games by Treasure, short but sweet. It’s over just as you have gotten pumped enough to enjoy a game three times bigger. Fortunately, the game is so packed with action and fun that it doesn’t really matter. There are several difficulty levels and reason enough to play through the game several times. The sound can be a bit annoying. There is this great scene where Arain is battling her way through a monster infested subway in the dark and it is so ruined by the background music. As far as backgrounds go, the graphics are stunning and great for the N64, but the character designs are presented very poorly. It may be a mixed bag on the outside, but it’s interior is solid. If I didn’t explain thoroughly that this game is ACTION PACKED, well shit I just did it again. It really does remind me of Time Crisis and other similar arcade games where the player has to deal with enemies jumping down from places and sidestepping into different positions that you have to be aware of. Particularly memorable is a scene where Arain takes down an entire Navy in a matter of about two minutes flying around at dizzying speeds on a piece of jagged metal controlled by a psychic friend. It may seem a shame that this game ends so soon, but it’s worth playing over and over again. Now that we finally have it, there is no reason that you shouldn't give this game a spin. It's a true classic.

This game is awe-inspiring. It's the most expensive title on the VC, but it's also the freshest to the general audience, and one of the more unique titles. The rail-shooter-meets-third-person-shooter type design really works, and even with controls as simple (if tricky to learn) as they are, Treasure manages to do what they do best - get a lot of variety, in a short amount of time. The only issue I have with this game is that I was really confused by the story... it would've been nice to have English subtitles, seriously.

Thank the randomness of the video game gods! I remember seeing this being played in my favorite import store on Elizabeth St in China Town (NY). It was beyond expensive, but I nearly purchased it. I left instead with a stack of import saturn games, some anime, and a couple of jpop cds & game sound-tracks. I went back the following week after payday, but they were sold out. They never got any more in. Treasure and Sin & Punishment are perfect examples of why I play games to begin with. HELLS YEAH!!!!!!

"It works fine with the CC (I'd say at least as well as it would with the ugly three-pronged 64 controller) but I'd really prefer a nunchuk/remote combo. After being spoiled by Wii games it's really annoying to have to use a stick to move a cursor!"

I agree. This looks like it could be some great old-school shoot-em-up fun, but I'd rather waggle a Wiimote than move a cursor by analog. That, and this is only one player. Shame, since these types are always more fun w/ 2+ players. Oh, and it's twelve bucks. (tho I appreciate the translation work)

Controls are confusing to understand in the beginning but you get the hang of it later on. I just don't understand why Nintendo priced a N64 game for 1200 wii points. The game is short but challenging.

Ah, the first N64/import game I ever downloaded. I have no idea what the hell this game is about, but it is AWESOME! and the music is great. It's incredibly difficult though and the limited continues and the osomewhat oddly set up controls don't make it any easier. I'm still stuck on the aircraft stage on normal.

But still awesome game, well worth the 1200 point plunge. 5/5.

Treasure, I love you.

Ricardo91

110. Ricardo91 United States 12 Jul 2008, 20:47 BST

CyclopsScott

Finally got this. Went through and lost all of my 13 credits by stage 2-2 (Sad, i know!) Went through again and didnt die until stage 2-2! I really like this game. You get better as you learn the levels and the tracks. The story is confusing though. And some of the audio is hard to hear with only Japanese subbies.

I just started playing this game a few days ago, and I really just can't get into it. Keep in mind I've only gotten to level 1-3 (I think it was), but story just makes no sense, I can't see what any of the graphics is supposed to resemble, I sometimes find it unclear with things I need to dodge and how, and it's just not that fun, like fx the "Radan" boss at level 1-2, all i did was just to hold down the fire botton at then jump every now and then, pretty boring. Should I keep giving this game chances? Or do you think its just not for me? Thanks

Golgo

127. Golgo United Kingdom 30 Oct 2008, 13:34 GMT

I'm really enjoying this. Just beaten it for first time (much more forgiving than Treasure's usual fare) albeit on 'Easy' mode - haha!

The story is indeed pure gash and it is acted atrociously, but that just adds to the lunatic charm of it for me. Reminds me a bit of that nasty anime Urotsokidoji, which I'm ashamed to say I've seen...twice.

The crazy shooting scenarios are where it's at, in particular the incredible aircraft carrier level and the side-scrolling level. It's not in the same league as Lylat Wars, in my opinion, but well worth a blast. And at about 45 minutes for a run-through it doesn't outstay it's welcome.

Captain_Konami

128. Captain_Konami United States 01 Nov 2008, 00:12 GMT

Just.......WOW! Awesomw looking game that I had NO CLUE was on the VC until today. Kept hearing the name dropped, but hadn't looked it up until now. It's looks like an Ikari Warriors 3D.

This is now on top of my To Buy list! If the controls don't hamstring the gameplay (multiaxis aiming and moving is always a tough trick to pull off via natural controller limitations and human desire to not be controlling 4 joysticks simultaneously..... :P ), then it's GOT to be a great game.

Reminds me a bit of Contra 3's overhead levels, but with less overhead view and 50 times more kickassness.

tce

129. tce United Kingdom 10 Nov 2008, 16:09 GMT

This game is like a personification of the life essence of video games. Pure, unadulterated fun. It doesn't try to be art, it doesn't try to be "epic" - it's just a 45-minute blast that you will play over and over again. Absolute masterpiece. I really can't get across how much I love this game, particularly the final boss.

(PS. The final boss is the most enjoyable final boss in the history of video games.)

From a technical and artistic stance, S&P could be the best N64 game of them all - but as has already been said above, its over all too soon, and it is this shortness that ultimately hurts the game's cause.
