Gazing back into the mists of time, you can’t help but be amazed that Capcom managed to get everyone so excited about each new Street Fighter II update. On the Virtual Console alone we’ve already had two versions of the game, and now here’s the..

Good grief, surely it's illegal for them to be cheating us all *again* with these several versions? =P

I don't think I'll bother with this one, due to apparently being pretty unbalanced and slow. Please may we have the Super Turbo that Live Arcade/PSN are getting Capcom?

This game blows. The art is damn ugly compared to Turbo and the new characters are soulless and boring, the music is rubbish and the sound effects horribly tinny. It's no 'possibly the best one' it's definitely the worst one. Highly NOT recommended.

Super Street Fighter II is the Street Fighter game to have on VC!
Turbo is pretty fast as well, but Super SFII is much better.
More game modes. 4 new characters, musics, backgrounds.
Best graphics and animations in any SNES SFII game.

My ratings on all four SNES Street Fighter games:

Street Fighter II --- 3/5 Stars
Street Fighter II Turbo --- 4/5 Stars
Super Street Fighter II --- 5/5 Stars
Street Fighter Alpha 2 --- 5/5 Stars

The best version is the Turbo version. The musics, all the voices are amazing in the turbo version, but in the super sf2 its not so cool.

If only Capcom had released Super Street Fighter II Turbo on the SNES, then it'll be the best SF game. I prefer SF II Turbo instead of this Super SF II since the speed really does make the game better. But if speed doesn't matter, this is the best choice - More characters, and improved graphics and sound.

Bass X0

9. Bass X0 United Kingdom 22 Oct 2007, 01:03 BST

When Virtual Console starts supporting 3DO games. It was never released on any current console the VC supports.

SSFII was, I believe, the largest SNES game ever and still had cut animation from the arcade game - and arcade Super Turbo had even more animation than Super.

Besides, Super was the next game in the series, not Super Turbo. I suppose Capcom wanted to give fans Super immediately on SNES rather than waiting for Super Turbo to be in the arcades for a while before releasing it on SNES.

I prefer SNES Super to SNES Turbo, I don't like games too fast.

Later versions would improve the game more, and after Turbo the drop in speed is a bit of a step back but this is still an excellent version of SF2 - and seemingly the last we'll get on the VC.
The new characters were welcome additions (well OK T. Hawk is rubbish), there's improved character art on the versus/post fight screens. Oh and they gave Blanka a beasty death scream again - after for some reason giving him a normal one in snes turbo.

There was a cheat to increase the speed - though not matching turbo's top speeds.

Given that the game was improved with subsequent versions, I was a bit reluctant to give this full marks.
However they're unlikely to get released and you will have plenty of fun with this. If super-speedy gameplay is not your only requirment, this is the version to get.

You can speed up this game at the title screen where it says 'GAME START'. Just press 3x right on the d-pad and it's about just as fast as Street Fighter II Turbo. Too bad most people immediately press Start and skip the turbo settings so they're playing the slow version.

For those who don't know: There is an option to speed up gameplay! On the main screen, after you press start, but before you select super battle, vs. battle, etc...push right on the D-pad 1, 2, or 3 times and you will see 1, 2, or 3 stars appear. 3 stars represents the fastest gameplay.

I loved this game as a child, I got tired of playing the older Street Fighters on the system, I wanted an updated version, then I remember renting this from Blockbuster, then rushing home to play it, the first thing that got me was the awesome intro of Ryu executing a fireball, then the music got stuck in my head forever, glad they redid it.

I highly recommend this game, it's the best Street Fighter on the system, (I didn't like Street Fighter Alpha 2 though, horrible, horrible port); 5/5 rating.

Great memories.

Tides of Chaos, I'd say get Turbo, as the only real improvement this game brings is the addition of Cammy (and perhaps Fei Long, but I always preferred him in Tekken :)). But that's a minority opinion. Most people prefer this one, I think.

SSF2+ (Which I call the SNES version of SSF2) is the most advanced, old school SF2 game. By old school, I eliminate the great ST which has supers, juggles and tech throws. SSF2+ basically fixes the two very big issues of the arcade version, which is the slow speed and ridiculous Zangief glitch. This end product is then a great game and one of my favorite versions of SF2. It has a near perfect rendition of the mind games, zoning and trading that are trademarks of SF2. All the characters are more fleshed out in SSF2+ as opposed to HF and is probably the best update to the franchise. To those who complain about getting WW - I am sorry, but someone should have told you that game isn't worth downloading. I feel HF (turbo) and SSF2+ are both really great games, but on a pure competitive level, SSF2+ shines through. And as a serious competitor in ST, this serves as a great way to practice O. characters. Even if you have HF, I recommend getting this by a long shot. Five stars this game does deserve indeed.

I surprised a friend by buying him SSF2 the other day for his b/day. I went over to his house with my classic controller hidden and hinted for him to boot up the Wii heh heh

Within minutes it was like we were 14 years old again. His partner must have thought we were crazy when we were shouting words like DEVASTATING and BOOYOW at each other. SSF2 really is the best competitive game there is. Before long you really get into it and cheap tactics surface just to get the win. Before long desperation sets in and you suddenly find yourself encouraging your friend to play Deejay or something in the hope you can whoop him in the next round!

Great game and for my money this is the best version of SF2 on the SNES. :p

I think something needs to be cleared up about this version--it has a different engine than SF2Turbo, and most serious fans prefer the previous version; this is why many were bummed about the Street Fighter Collection for PS2 and Xbox, as you were stuck competing on the most recent, less-favored engine for SF2. I'm not the biggest fan of SF2 (or fighting games in general) in the world, but I do appreciate the difference and likewise believe Turbo's engine and "feel" are superior. I am somewhat at a loss to articulate further, except to add, perhaps, "more responsive" to my feelings toward SF2Turbo. SSF2's engine is definitely MUCH prettier, and it doesn't hurt to own both versions and compare them for one's own preference (though I really can't imagine someone who feels the difference giving the nod to SSF2), but I strongly recommend against SSF2 ahead of SF2Turbo. 3/5

Anyway, this is my second favourite game of all time, regardless of system. The character rooster is fantastic compared to any other fighter, gameplay is 100% great and it still looks nice. Even nicer than the ALPHA games if you ask me. I also love the teambattle option in the SNES version where a good player can choose, lets say 5 characters, while the other one have 8. Good handicap settings in regular vs matches too.

SSFII on the SNES is a good port of an average game. SFA3 on GBA is a terrible port of a great game.

As a casual SF2 player back in the day, I never played any version beyond SF2 Turbo. When I watch videos of Turbo, it brings back all those memories. That's why I can't decide which version to get, Turbo or New Challengers. If someone has only played Turbo, will New Challengers seem mostly the same (except for the new characters obv) or will it feel like a different game? I'm so torn. I'm going to have to re-learn most of the moves anyway, but I don't want something that's significantly different from what I remember. Help! How different is the look/sound/feel of the original 12 characters in New Challengers? Which one should I download? All opinions welcome!

@John Dough. What a coincidence! I had the very same predicament, which I asked over at the SF Turbo review! I can't help you though, I'm sorry. I was told to get New Challengers, since I don't play a lot of fighters and Bass X0 (who told me this) said it was better suited to a beginner. You're better off asking him or someone else who has actually played the games before.

John Dough

55. John Dough United States 09 Jul 2008, 20:55 BST

Mr. Cheez, thanks for the response. Hopefully someone else will chime in. My brother (my main SNES opponent back then) doesn't have a Wii, but he's trying to talk me into Turbo b/c it's what I'll remember. If I go with New Challengers and it feels/sounds completely different, I'll be disappointed. So at the moment, I'm leaning towards the older version, but would love some other opinions first.

Even though this is supposed to be the slower, easier-going SF port on the SNES, I still suck at it. I can never beat anybody in time battle mode, and I occaisionally have to replay battles dozens of times in super battle before I finally beat my opponent. And while I try to pull off my special moves, the opponent is slugging me with theirs. I tell ya, if I started off w/ SF Turbo, I'd be dead meat. :|
